Where to eat in Milan

An Italian restaurant on Via della Spiga, in the fashion district. I've been to Il Baretto twice now and both times the food was excellent. The atmosphere is also very pleasant and they have outside seating when the weather is good.

A small Italian restaurant on Via Ariberto, off Corso Genova. I've been to Rovello even before they moved locations and I've never had a bad meal there. Really delicious but simple (not overcomplicated) dishes and the staff are super friendly.

An Italian restaurant on Piazza Santo Stefano. This was a really lovely discovery for me. I was in Milan during Design Week, so it was really difficult to find reservations in my usual places, which led me to Ciciarà. It's especially nice for solo dining as they have a counter. They change their menu seasonally but I'm sure they will always have something delicious to try each time. I had the pasta with lamb and it was perfect.

A restaurant and delicatessen in a courtyard off Via Montenapoleone, open since 1957. I was a bit hesitant to add this one as I've been here twice: once I had a fantastic meal, but the second time it was underwhelming and the service was terrible. In the end I decided to add it as the setting is really lovely, and when you do get good food and service it's excellent. You might also notice that it made an appearance in The Devil Wears Prada 2.

The courtyard restaurant and bar at the Mandarin Oriental, off Via Andegari. I know it might not seem like an exciting suggestion because it's the all-day restaurant in a hotel, but their food is exceptional. Especially worth trying is the pasta with a simple tomato sauce — the most delicious one I have ever had. They also have an excellent veal Milanese.

A pizzeria on Via Statuto, near Moscova. Really delicious pizza in a rustic-style room.

A pizzeria on Via Bernardino Luini, near Sant'Ambrogio, serving Cilento-style pizza. I can't say I've ever had bad pizza in Italy so it's really hard to say one is better than another but Da Zero is definitely one of the best.

A pizzeria on Via Andrea Maffei, in the Porta Romana area. Not the absolute best pizza I've had in Milan but definitely top quality, and it's popular with the locals.

A seafood restaurant on Via Savona, in the Tortona district. One of the absolute best restaurants in Milan and definitely in my top three favourites. They focus on seafood of the best quality and have some of the most delicious pasta with seafood dishes you'll have in Milan.

A long-standing Milanese seafood restaurant on Via Pasquale Sottocorno, near Piazza Risorgimento. Da Giacomo is the one restaurant I never skip when I'm in Milan. I've been going there for years now and they are consistently one of the best restaurants in Milan. They give you this little complimentary welcome pizza slice which is so delicious it's probably one of the reasons we go there. They focus on seafood mainly but they do have other options.

The Langosteria group's bistrot, a few streets from the original on Via Savona. All the Langosteria restaurants are absolutely perfect, but this one is more casual so I wanted to include it to give you options. The food is just as delicious as Langosteria but the atmosphere is slightly more chill.

A Japanese deli and dining room on Via Amedei. I know it might seem odd to go to a Japanese restaurant when visiting Milan, so definitely prioritise Italian cuisine when you're there, but if you want something different or a break from Italian food Gastronomia Yamamoto is a great option. They are a traditional Japanese restaurant with a great menu that changes seasonally, but the main draw for us is the onigiri.

A takeaway counter behind the Duomo selling panzerotti – fried filled dough. One of the most important things for me to do while visiting Milan is to have panzerotti. It's also one of the few times I'm willing to queue for food. It's one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. My favourite is the ham and cheese but they also have vegetarian options. They close at the end of July for the summer, though, so you have to make sure to get there in time.

A historic caffè and pasticceria on Via Montenapoleone. Great for a quick bite, a pastry, coffee or a hot chocolate.

A classic Milanese pasticceria and bar on Corso Genova. I went and had a drink there, but they also have tons of pastries and cakes so it depends on what you're in the mood for. Really great service as well. Close to Rovello 18 if you want to have a pre-dinner drink.

A gelateria on Via Vigevano, by the Navigli. One of the best gelatos I've had in Milan. I'm particularly excited when I can find my favourite flavours, chocolate and caramel.
